China’s government announces new three-child policy for couples || Medium
The Chinese government announced on Monday that it is lowering strict family planning restrictions and allowing couples to have three children each, according to an official Xinhua post translated by Channel News Asia.
Why Important: China’s ruling Communist Party raised the limit of two children by single parents to fight the aging population and declining birth rates that have raised concerns about the country’s economic future.
Big picture: The government put in place a one-child oppression policy to reduce population growth in 1979.
It reduced the number of couples to two children in 2016, but Census figures released earlier this month show that the country has recorded a slow population growth for more than half a century.
